Die Burger

2010-12-08

The last race of 2010 is behind me and I finished it in the best way possible. If I won Die Burger fietstoer in Stellenbosch it would be my forth consecutive victory in this race.

So the pressure for a win was on. We started together with the Vets. On the start line I saw that my competition was not that hard and after climbing Hellshoegte, at the front of the Vets bunch, I saw that the other ladies was no longer with us. I then decided I was just going to race as if I was one of the Vets. So I stayed close to the front of the bunch and went on attacks and a few times I closed gaps. I felt that I had power in the legs on the day. Issy Zimmerman was in my DC team last weekend so I knew he was strong, half way in to the race I saw that he was preparing to do something so I sat on his wheel and just managed to follow when he put in a super hard attack. Danie Marais (SA champ in his age group) was the only one that could follow us so the 3 of us got away. From there we worked together and stayed away to the finish about 1,5 minute ahead of the Vets bunch. Second lady came in with the next bunch.

It might have looked like an easy win but I still made it a hard race for my self and I am very happy with the way the race unfolded and that I could leave all the Western Cape Vets behind.

Last weekend was the Double Century in Swellendam, the 200km team time trail that I really enjoy. I was in the Cycle lab mixed team and we won our category and sat a new route record. I had a good day at the office and felt strong the whole way.

Now it is time for a break from racing and it will contain of lots of training and Christmas celebrations. I am staying in South Africa for Christmas this year where it is a bit warmer then last year when I spent Christmas in Sweden.
